Exploring Governance and Advocacy: MLQU Senior High School’s Trip to the Senate

On March 19, the corridors of power opened their doors to a group of eager minds from MLQU Senior High School as they embarked on an educational journey to the Senate of the Philippines.  Led by their principal and teachers, the students embarked on a day filled with insights, interactions, and invaluable experiences.

The day kicked off with a visit to Rizal Park, a symbolic start to a journey delving into Philippine history, heritage and culture.  As the students absorbed the significance of our nation’s past, they laid the foundation for understanding the complexities of our present and the aspirations for our future.

The focal point of the trip was the Senate of the Philippines, where the students were welcome to explore the hallowed halls of governance.  Their itinerary included a tour of the Senate museum, offering a glimpse into the institution’s rich history and the pivotal moments that shaped our nation’s legislative landscape.

The highlight of the day was the opportunity for the students to witness a live plenary session where senators deliberated on critical matters affecting the Filipino people.  Amidst the debates and discussions, the students gained firsthand insight into the workings of democracy and responsibilities of public servants.

However, the pinnacle of their experience came in the form of a meet-and-greet session with Senator Rafael T. Tulfo, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Migrant Workers.  Four students seized the opportunity to engage with the esteemed senator, posing thoughtful questions that reflected their concerns for the welfare and plight of the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

In a candid exchange, Senator Tulfo addressed the students’ inquiries, sharing his perspectives on pressing issues, such as national challenges, crimes against OFWs, labor migration policies, and the impact of his popular program.”Raffy Tulfo in Action” on legislative initiatives.

Moreover, some students had the privilege of observing the deliberation on Senate Bill No. 2572, which proposes the “Establishment of the Bulacan Special Economic and Free Port Zone, Creating for the Purpose the Bulacan Special Economic Zone and Freeport Authority.”  This first hand encounter with legislative proceedings offered a deeper understanding of the legislative process and its significance in shaping the nation’s economic landscape.

As the day drew to a close, the students departed the Senate with minds enriched and perspectives expanded.  Their journey not only deepened their understanding of governance and advocacy but also instilled in them a sense of civic responsibility and engagement.

The educational trip to the Senate proved to be a transformative experience for the students of MLQU Senior High School.  It ignited their passion for active citizenship, empowered them to voice their concerns, and inspired them to become agents to positive change in their communities.  In the hallowed halls of governance, seeds of leadership were sown, promising a brighter future for our nation.
