Honoring Philippine Arts and Culture Achievements

On a balmy October evening, the illustrious Victoria Sports Tower in EDSA was a hub of excitement and anticipation as the Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU) hosted the 20th Gawad Tanglaw Para sa Sining at Kulturang Pilipino.  With the resplendent theme “Tanglaw @ 20:  Gabay sa Sining at Kultura Tungo sa Isang Malayang Bansa (Tanglaw @ 20: Guiding the Arts and Culture Towards a Free Nation), this event marked a significant milestone in the Philippine cultural landscape.

Gawad Tanglaw: Nurturing Philippine Arts and Culture

Gawad Tanglaw, an academe-based media critics award-giving body stands as a beacon of excellence in the realm of Philippine arts and culture.  Composed of academics, scholars, historians, and media communications specialists, its primary mission is to uplift the state of the nation’s arts and culture through annual citations and recognition.

The brainchild of Dr. Romeo Lirio and presided over by Dr. Jaime G. Ang, who also serves as the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) and School of Arts, Sciences, and Education (SASE) at MLQU, Gawad Tanglaw has established itself as one of the most prestigious award-giving bodies in the Philippines, alongside the Gawad Urian and the Young Critics Circle.

A Night of Glitz and Glory

The 20th Gawad Tanglaw Para sa Sining at Kulturang Pilipino was an evening filled with elegance, passion, and appreciation for the Philippines’ rich artistic heritage.  Various awards were presented to outstanding individuals and productions that have left an indelible mark on Philippine theater, cinema, and television.

One of the most poignant moments of the evening was the posthumous award presented to the late Mike Enriquez.  He was honored with the “Natatanging Tanglaw sa Sining ng Radyo at Telebisyon” (Distinguished Luminary in Radio and Television Arts) award, recognizing his immense contributions to the industry.  The emotional tribute to Mr. Enriquez underscored his irreplaceable presence in the world of Philippine media.

MLQU’s Second Stint as Host

Notably, this was the second time that MLQU had the privilege of hosting the Gawad Tanglaw.  MLQU’s support for Gawad Tanglaw is deeply rooted in its commitment to the promotion and preservation of the Philippine Arts and Culture.  MLQU recognizes the profound impact that the arts and culture have on society and the crucial role they play in shaping the nation’s identity.

The university firmly believes that celebrating the achievements of artists, actors, directors, and media practitioners is not only a tribute to their hard work but also a way to inspire the next generation of creative minds.  By hosting Gawad Tanglaw, MLQU provides a platform for these talented individuals to receive the recognition they deserve, encouraging them to continue their invaluable contributions to the country’s cultural tapestry.

A Resounding Success

The ceremony left a lasting impression on all who attended.  The event was not only a celebration of outstanding achievements in Philippine arts and culture but also a testament to the dedication and passion of those who have dedicated their lives to these pursuits.

Congratulations to Gawad Tanglaw for a successful, eventful, and well-attended 20th year.  May this award-giving body continue to guide and inspire Philippine artists and creators for many more decades, lighting the way towards a brighter and more culturally vibrant nation.
